"You need a lot of different types of people to make the world better."
-Joe Louis
Below are our different types of people. Students from different backgrounds with different experiences all committed to being the Champion a student deserves.

Why do you want to be a CHAMPION?
"I'm interested in being a CHAMPION because throughout my year here at University of Michigan, I realized that I want to be a large contribute to the come up of Detroit. As a film and business major I want to inspire and give back as much as I can to the youth. I plan to help those who deserve better than what they have now so they can be great and give back to their city too. My life time goal is to Learn, Earn, & Return; this is my time to Return." |
Why do you want to be a CHAMPION?
I want to be a CHAMPION because simply it's my passion to help. I've never had a mentor and I never come in contact with people from my own race that went to college, so for a long time, to me, college was just for white people. And that's something that no should believe about themselves. I have a strong moral code and it's important for everybody to at least have somebody-if that makes sense. It's my civil duty to help people in any way that I can |
Why do you want to be a CHAMPION?
"I am interested in becoming a CHAMPION because I value forming relationships with people, and being an influence in others' lives. Being a CHAMPION gives high school students in Detroit the opportunity to learn more about higher education and life experiences. Being a CHAMPION will also inspire these high school students to continue onto higher education and to ultimately be great in everything they do." |

Why do you want to be a CHAMPION?
"I was born and raised in Detroit and I understand the feelings of inadequacy. I knew that I wanted to go to college but hearing of how hard and competitive it is and people saying things like our school is behind educationally, scared me. There were many times where I felt as though I would not be good enough. I want to be someone that encourages students who may feel the same way. I am proof that there is a chance if they work hard enough and I want to show them that they can do it." |
Why do you want to be a CHAMPION?
"I am interested in becoming a CHAMPION, because I grew up in the city of Detroit. Very often, I think about how I got to the university and how many of my peers did not. It is not very common for residents of the city to enroll in this university, but I did. People often associate the city with negative connotations and I am here to show them different. I am a product of the city of Detroit and I am a positive role model. I want to show children that they too can become a wolverine and that it is not impossible." |
Why do you want to be a Champion?
"I want to be a CHAMPION because I know what it means to have someone older to look up to, and the kind of impact that can have on a young person. Having an older mentor that is reliable can keep someone motivated when they want to quit. I want to help someone the way that my older cousins and friends helped me while I was in high school." |

Why do you want to be a CHAMPION?
I feel that I have an obligation, and duty to serve. My success is due to the strong support system I had at home, being aware of my resources, a strong network of friends and supervisors, and the many people that served as a mentor to me along the way. I do not want to passively watch youth struggle unnecessarily when I am able to help and advice them. Of course a student will have to face challenges, some more than others, but they don't have to do it alone. They shouldn't have to do it alone when the weight of their world and immediate surroundings is all they know and recognize. CHAMPIONS: DETROIT has the potential to remove the blinds from a young students eyes and show them a different world that would be nearly impossible to access without a guiding hand. |
Why do you want to be a CHAMPION?
"In high school, I started my own mentorship program for cheerleaders, and I was also a member of the first group of Chester Library mentors. I have a passion for mentorship, and I think CHAMPIONS would be a positive experience for me because I can apply my previous experiences working with many different youths to the Detroit residents this organization will work with. There is nothing I enjoy more than watching someone else's personal growth as a result of something I did, and the focus CHAMPIONS places on relationships is something that I am looking to be a part of." |

Why do you want to be a CHAMPION?
"I am interested in being a CHAMPION because I believe everybody should have a positive role model. Growing up there was not anyone around me that had the same aspiration as me. I did not have someone I could look to as a possible guide. I want to be able to provide an individual with something I did not have. Giving someone a chance to ask questions and get advice before they venture into the unknown is what I want to do. Also to let someone know that you can make it as far as you desire to." |
Why do you want to be a CHAMPION?
"I am interested in becoming a CHAMPION because it's important for children to have a positive role model in their lives. Children may have fears and insecurities about the next stages of their lives, and as an older person who experienced similar feelings once upon a time, I will assure them that their fears are normal but can be overcome. Growing up, there were times where I wished that I had someone other than friends and family to talk to and confide in. These children may have similar feelings, and I am interesting in providing the ear that listens to their fears, secrets, and other issues. |
